About Our Democratic Candidates
We enjoyed crockpots and conversation courtesy of our local democrats and community members like yourself.
If you could not make it, here is the article published in the Record Reporter about the event.
Citizens Gather for Democrats’ Candidate Forum
It began with the Pledge of Allegiance. On Saturday, September 19, at the P&IN Depot in New Meadows, more than 40 people attended a gathering hosted by Adams County Democrats to hear what democratic candidates have to offer as alternatives to current government leadership. Positions the candidates seek include US Representative, Governor, State Senator, State Representative and State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Kaylee Peterson is running to represent Idaho’s District 1 in the US House of Representatives against Russ Fulcher. She is a 6th generation Idahoan living on land farmed by her family. She believes her opponent is not protecting Idaho’s farmers, ranchers, or its public lands. She especially wants to deal with corruption she sees happening at the federal level and is already working with people in Congress on ways to fix the problems.
Terri Pickens is challenging Brad Little for Governor. Terri is a 4th generation Idahoan, born and raised in Pocatello. She received her law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law. Terri believes Idaho families are not being protected from federal aggression. She wants to insure that the Idaho economy rewards work and innovation and that every child gets a great education. Terri is a life-long outdoorswoman, will keep public lands in public hands, and will protect Idahoans’ civil rights.
Patrice Yeatter explained why she is running for State Senate saying, “We need to balance our budget but not on the backs of the working class.” While the wealthy receive huge tax breaks, the legislature is cutting services for the middle class. She says that claiming these services are unaffordable after giving tax money back to the rich is wrong.
Pete Gertonson is running for State Representative Seat 7. He said there is a huge disconnect between those that govern and everyday Idahoans. “It’s time the Idaho Legislature concerns itself with practical, everyday economic concerns that affect people’s wallets and well-being.” He is an advocate of the “no grocery tax” and raising the minimum wage.
Larry Nostrant is running for House Seat 7A. As a retired construction manager and fishing guide, Larry says he is a strong advocate for protecting Idaho’s public lands. He wants to improve post high school opportunities in the trades and technical careers. Larry received bank management training and experience from the Vietnam Veterans Education & Placement program. He believes the current management of our state tax dollars is inexcusable.
Running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction is Becky Sundin Mitchell. Becky wants to modernize Idaho’s school funding model “to insure all students receive the resources they require” and strengthen teacher support. “Our state ranks near the bottom in per pupil spending…despite having over $1 billion in reserves.” This highlights the need for a more effective school funding model. Becky has been a teacher for 27 years and recently received the ‘Idaho teacher of the year’ award.
We were thrilled to bring this amazing group of candidates to our community for you all to have a chance to learn about them, ask them your questions, and voice your concerns about the needs of our state and country.
